I am extremely grateful to David A. Lucas for the photo of Lone Keel shown above. David is the grandson of joint-owner Jack Walsh (along with bookmaker William Hill), who is shown on the right, with his wife Ivy on the left. During the Second World War Ivy ran what was described as a 'One Woman Dog Track' at Staines whilst husband Jack was an RAF pilot. When he returned he continued to run the track. British Pathe picked up on the story of Ivy and this can be seen using the link below. Towards the end of the clip Jack returns on leave from the War and is seen with his 4 year old daughter, who later became the mother of David A.Lucas! http://www.britishpathe.com/video/one-woman-dog-track/query/one+woman+dog+track

THE FINAL

This was seen by punters as a three dog race. Manhattan Midnight went off the 7/4 favourite, but in the end did not beat anything home. Demotic Mack was made third favourite at 7/2 but only beat one home. It was left to second favourite Lone Keel to follow Melksham Numeral around the first bend and to take up the running down the far side. Previous winner, Wattle Bark, was allowed to go off at 20/1 but belied his odds by taking up second place just behind the leader. At the final bend Lone Keel, although running wide, ran on sufficiently strongly to win by 1/2 a length, with Melksham Numeral getting back up by a short head to reclaim second spot from last years winner.
