1949 PRE-FINAL
One of the
greyhounds of 1948 was Local Interprize, who had managed runners up spot in the
1949 FINAL
While it was not surprising to see Glencoy Ranger at the head of the market at 9/4, it was difficult to justify the short price of 3/1 on Local Interprize, given that Sailing at Dawn had been impressive in his semi final, and Narrogar Ann had only been defeated by ¾ of a length. Narrogar Ann was drawn in trap 2 and on offer at 5/1, while Sailing at Dawn enjoyed the luxury of the inside box but was still offered at 9/2. When the boxes opened, to the dismay of the crowd it was 100/7 outsider Dangerous Prince who lived up to his name. This caused Local Interprize and Glencloy Regent to check, and it was left to Sailing at Dawn and Narrogar Ann to give chase down the back straight. As they approached the third bend Narrogar began mounting a sustained challenge, and finally got on terms with Dangerous in the home straight. She eventually proved the stronger by a length and a quarter, with Dangerous holding on to second two and a half lengths ahead of Sailing At Dawn.
