EARLY ROUNDS
The ante post favourite for the event was the well fancied Cranog Bet and she was drawn in the very first heat against some relatively unknown dogs, including an outsider called Hack Up Chieftan. All seemed well as the bitch broke in front, led at the first and seemed to be striding to the inevitable victory. However, first Rupuninni, then Jerpoint Prince, and finally Hack up Cheiftan tackled the bitch who buckled under pressure. The heat was won by Hack Up Chieftan and the bitch went out in fourth. By the time the second round came around a number of the favourites had disappeared, including Jerpoint Prince. New dogs to emerge were Die Cast, We'll See who beat both Hack Up Chieftan and Scamp Boy, and Rupuninni.
SEMI-FINALS
The semi finals proved no easier to predict that the earlier rounds and the first semi provided a big shock. The unfancied 20/1 Crazy Platinum led at the first and benefitted from early trouble to go on to win unchallenged by a length in a disappointing 29.08 from the well fancied Die Cast on offer at 9/4 with Rupunnini, the 6/4 favourite taking the third final spot after missing his break and being badly baulked. In the second semi there was also baulking at the first which affected most of the runners including the favourite. We'll See, trap 4, emerged as the victor at 5/1 in a slow time of 29.57 having broken 29 seconds in all previous rounds. Scamp Boy from the outside box, ran a game race to claim second a 1/2 length away with the unfancied Hack Up Chieftan a further 4 lengths back in third at 100/8.
THE FINAL
In a very open final it was Die Cast who was made the 2/1 favourite from semi final victor We''ll See a close second at 9/4. It was down to the wide running Crazy Platinum to break first on the outside closely followed by We''ll See, but severe bumping took place affecting the two frint runners as well as Scamp Boy and Rupunnini. The allowed the outsider Hack Up Chieftan to sneak up the inside and take the lead, a lead he maintained throughout despite the favourite Die Cast challenging persistently. At the line Hack Up had a length and 3/4 to spare, winning in a time of 28.92, with Rupunnini some 3 lengths behind the winner in third.
