If 1964 was seen as a graveyard for early round favourites, 1965 carried on the trend with as many as 5 of the top 7 in the betting going out in round one. However, the antepost favourite was a dog called Booked Out, and he looked out at half way in his heat having missed the break. However, he made up rapid ground from halfway and managed to salvage the third qualifying place on the line. Sun Bow, Chittering Clapton and Creggan Bush all ran powerfully in round one to book their places in the next stage of the competition. By the second round it was Creggan Bush who was to provide the shock by impeding the competition favourite Booked Out and helping to eliminate him. The heat was won by a comfortable 4 lengths by Sunbow, and others to state strong cases in this round were Westpark Ash, Clifden Time and his litter brother Clifden Orbit, both owned by Pat Gardner.

In the first semi final it was the outsider Chittering Clapton who broke quickly and led throughout, with Westpark Ash and Clifden Time bumping each other at the first and cancelling each others chances. It was left to Flash Solar and Greenane Flame to claim the minor honours. In the second semi it was Shy Prairie who led at the first closely challenged by Creggan Bush, the latter running on too strongly to win with Sunbow getting up to claim second in the home straight.

In the final it was Sunbow who was made the uneasy 2/1 favourite despite not winning his semi but occupying the favoured inside box, closely followed by the well drawn Chittering Clapton at 9/4, situated in the outside box, with Creggan Bush third best at 3/1. The final proved to be a one dog event as Chittering Clapton broke quickly on the outside and benefitted from bunching on the inner. He built up a substantial lead from Sunbow and She Prairie, while Greenane Flame was knocked over. The winning distance was a long looking 5 3/4 lengths and the winning time a promising 28.82. Shy Prairie finished 3 lengths behind Sunbow to claim third.
