THE FINAL by Steve McClenn
Owned jointly by Miss Pauline
Wallis and Sir Robert Adeane, Faithful Hope, trained by Paddy Keane, completely upset all
the form books when romping home by four and a quarter lengths. A strong finishing
railer he had made slow starts in all the previous rounds and coupled with the fact he had
drawn the "bogey hole" (trap three) he wasn't given much chance against his
early paced rivals , of which the Irish flyer Maryville Hi, was a strongly fancied
favourite.
Few could believe their eyes when
the traps opened, for the the first to show was the white jacket of Faithful Hope followed
by Dusty Trail and Kilbeg Kuda.
At the first turn it was
"Dusty" who took up the running holding a slender lead to the second bend, where
for no apparent reason he moved wide allowing "Hope" to get on terms once again.
Along the back
straight Faithful Hope increased his lead and hit the final bend with plenty in hand to
score in great style, recording 28.52, the fastest ever for a Derby Final.
