The racecourse of Albuquerque Downs is situated on the New Mexico State Fairgrounds at Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico. It held its inaugural meeting on 13th April 1938 and traditionally, from 1946, held a meeting lasting for 11 days to coincide with the New Mexico State Fair. The 8 furlong oval track now has separate 7 furlong and 10 furlong chutes and a 340 metre home straight. The meeting runs from late June through to late September and has, in the past, offered thoroughbred and quarter horse races. The highlight of the season is the New Mexico State Fair Futurity for 2 year olds over just 400 yards which was first run in 1946 when Pelican was victorious. Another feature race is the Albuquerque Fall Quarter Horse Championship. The track remains a well-supported course offering 23 race days in total, 15 for thoroughbreds and 8 for quarter horses.
