The New South Wales town of Ardlethan lies in the Coolamon Shire area of the state at the intersection of two highways, the Newell Highway and the Burley Griffin Way. The town originally came to prominence in the 19th century after gold was discovered, although that period of its history was brief. The town has its own racecourse, on the banks of Mirrool Creek in Warri, which stages a single race meeting annually each March, with racing administered by the Ardlethan Picnic Racing Club. The inaugural meeting at the track was held in March 1960, while today the principal race is the Ardlethan Picnic Cup.
