Grateful thanks to Robin Charnock for providing the detailed information shown below

Records show that racing took place at Barnet as early as 1793 and lasted on and off at until the final meeting on 7th September 1858. The original course was situated at Barnet Common, north of Mays Lane, but the common was enclosed in 1817 and the course moved a short distance to Barnet Fair. Meetings took place intermittently in 1793-1797, 1809-1815 and then from 1833 to the final 1858 meeting.

Key Questions still to be answered:-

  • Where exactly was the course situated?

  • What shape and distance was it?

  • What remains of the course today?

  • Can anyone provide a map, badge or racecard from the course?
