| The Curragh Racecourse is situated in Kildare and first evidence of racing in the area is in 1727. The first Irish Derby was held at the racecourse in 1866 when Selim was victorious. | ||
| The course is of utmost importance and hosts all 5 of the
Irish Classic races and 10 of the 12 Group One races held in Ireland. The Irish 1000 Gunieas, over 1 mile, was run for the first time in 1922 when Lady Violette was the winner. In 2008 the race was won by the Aidan O'Brien trained Halfway To Heaven The Irish 2000 Guineas, also over a mile, was first run in 1921 and was to prove to be a success for Soldennis. In the 2008 race the Aidan O'Brien trained Henrythenavigator was the winner. |

| The Irish St Leger is the final Classic of the season and is run over 1 mile 6 furlongs. It was run for the first time in 1915 when won by La Poloma. The 2008 running proved to be a triumph for Septimus. Thus Aidan O.Brien trained all 5 Classic winners in one season. | ||

furlongs. The 2008 race was won by Frozen Fire, trained by Aidan O'Brien. The Irish Oaks is also run over a mile and 4 furlongs. It was first run in 1895 when Sapling was the winner. By 2008 the Aidan O'Brien trained Moonstone was the winner. |
