DERBY GREYHOUND STADIUM

This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for helping to construct this page.

The greyhound stadium that was situated on the outskirts was famous for being built around an old, walled prison. It was administered by the Preston Greyhound Racing Association. The inaugural meeting took place on 29th April 1933 but unusually consisted of only 4 dog races. The first race was a sprint over just 260 yards and was won by the second favourite Tramore Lad who easily held on to beat the favourite Santober Lad by a length.

The major races were the Derby Plate over 420 metres and the Derby Vase over the extened 590 metres. The great Scurlogue Champ ran at the track on 16th November 1985 and held the record for 764 metres of 49.04 secs. The track closed in 1988.

This section gives a comprehensive picture of the badges produced by the track throughout the ages, but only provides the briefest of glimpses of its history. For those wishing to undertake further research we can recommend a visit to
