This was run on Thursday 4th May 1780, the first race on the second day of a 4 day Epsom Spring Meeting held on Epsom Downs.  A field of 9 faced the starter for the one mile contest, although there had been 36 subscribers to contest a first prize of £1,065 15 shillings (The equivalent of £181,700 in today's terms based on Bank of England inflation calculator). Colts carried 8 st whilst fillies carried 7 st 11 lbs.

THE DERBY 1780

Only 3 of the colts were named by the time of the race, and even the horse that came second was reported to be called Buddroo by Bailey's Racing Register rather than the more commonly held view that it was named Boudrow. The winner was trained by R Teasdale. The winner was Diomed, a chestnut by Florizel out of a Spectator mare.
