This, so called New Derby Stakes, was run on Saturday 13th June 1942 at Newmarket because of World War II, and the winner was bred by the 17th Earl of Derby and trained by Walter Earl at Newmarket. There were 13 runners from an initial entry of 56. The winner won by a neck with 2 lengths between second and third. The winners time was 2 mins 29.6 secs. The winner won a first prize of £3,844, (The equivalent of £172,200 in today's terms based on Bank of England inflation calculator).

In the Official 3-Y-O Free Handicap Fillies Triple Crown winner Sun Chariot was rated level with 2000 Guineas winner Big Game, and 5 lbs higher than Derby winner Watling Street. Based on their entire career performances, this site rates Sun Chariot 1lb higher than Big Game and 6lbs higher than Watling Street.
