This, so called New Derby Stakes, was run on Saturday 19th June 1943 at Newmarket because of World War II, and the winner was bred by Miss Dorothy Paget and trained by Walter Nightingall at Epsom. There were 23 runners from an initial entry of 72. The winner won by a head with 1/2 a length between second and third. The winners time was 2 mins 30.4 secs. The winner won a first prize of £4,388, (The equivalent of £190,200 in today's terms based on Bank of England inflation calculator).


In the Official 3-Y-O Free Handicap Derby winner Straight Deal was rated 1lb higher than 1000 Guineas and St Leger winner Herringbone, 3lbs higher than 2000 Guineas winner Kingsway, and 9lbs higher than Oaks winner Why Hurry. Based on their entire career performances, this site rates Straight Deal 5lbs higher than Herringbone, 8lbs higher than Kingsway and 11lbs higher than Why Hurry.
