The small Californian city of Ferndale, with a population of about 1400, lies in Humboldt County and is the home of Ferndale Racecourse. The Humboldt County Fairground is the location of Ferndale Racecourse, a 4 furlong oval track complete with two separate chutes, one of 5 furlongs and the other of 7 furlongs, sharing a 162 metre home straight, first staged racing in 1896. Throughout the next 39 years racing continued without official betting, but on 25th September 1935 a pari-mutuel system was introduced once State betting regulations eased. Today the track hosts 10 days of racing annually, culminating in its principal race, the Humboldt County Marathon Handicap. However, other popular races include the Land of Jazz Starter Stakes, the Charlie Palmer Starter Handicap and the Les Mademoiselle Stakes. It can stable up to 458 horses and seat up to 1800 punters in its grandstand.
