The South Dakota city of Fort Pierre, with a population of just over 2,000, is located in Stanley County and is home to a racetrack of the same name. Fort Pierre is situated at the confluence of the Missouri and Bad rivers, making an ideal location as a trading post which was established in 1832. The 4 furlong oval track, part of the Stanley Fairgrounds, is a member of an unofficial racing circuit of North and South Dakota, which also includes the Chippewa Downs based in Belcourt, North Dakota Horse Park, and Aberdeen in South Dakota which races in May. The Fort Pierre season lasts 4 days, starting in late April and continues into early May, and this enables North and South Dakota racing enthusiasts to enjoy their sport for 3 months of the year, switching to the States other tracks, including Chippewa Downs in June. Racing at Fort Pierre is administered by the Outdoor Recreation Development Association (ORDA). |
