The village of Gulargambone, on the banks of the Castlereagh River, is located about 390 kilometres (or 490 km by road) west of the state capital Sydney in the Coonamble Shire of New South Wales. The area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri people, and the name of the village comes from the word ‘gillahgambone which means ‘watering place for birds’. The first Europeans to settle in the village arrived in 1883 and today the village has a population of less than 400. However, despite only having a few people to call upon, the village runs its own racecourse, with racing administered by both the Gulargambone Jockey Club and Picnic Race Club. However, in the early days it was the Gulargambone Amateur Race Club which staged the races. On Friday 7th October 1898 the Race Club was registered with the Australian Jockey Club, and by the turn of the century popular meetings were being held, featuring the Gulargambone Handicap. On Friday 8th February 1901 the Handicap was won by Pheasant, beating Euroka and Snip.

The Gulargambone Cup, highlight of the modern day meetings, was staged in the 1930s. By 1930 the Gulargambone Jockey Club was organising the event and the Cup, worth £100 and run over 7 furlongs, was won by Mr Gleeson’s Lenient (4/1) beating One Humbug and Baltic Pine. Six years later the Gulargambone Cup Handicap, worth £20 and a Silver Cup, was won by Mick Duff owned by Mr J Quirk and ridden by Andrews, beating Bellagalak and Clangour.

Today the annual meeting is traditionally held on the last Saturday in September, although of late it has been staged on the second Saturday in October, and features the Gulargambone Cup over 1200 metres.
