The Hoosier Park racecourse can be found in the town of Anderson in the state of Indiana. It is a relatively young track, with negotiations opening in 1992 for a new track in Indiana. That dream was to be fully realised 2 years later when the track held its inaugural meeting on 1st September 1994 welcoming 8,000 people to the track on that day. The 7 furlong oval dirt track, with separate 6 furlong chute for sprint races, has a 380 metre home straight. The opening race on the opening day was won by B K Bentley driven by Gregg Haston. However, its principal race was the Indiana Derby, a Grade II event which the track hosted from its launch in 1995 through to 2012, after which it was transferred to Indiana Grand Racetrack. The Derby is contested over 8 1/2 furlongs and was won by Peruvian in 1995. Other feature races include the Group II Indiana Breeders Cup Oaks for fillies, first run over a mile and two years later extended to 8 ½ furlongs, and the Richmond Stakes. Although thoroughbred was always an integral part of the race programme, in 2012 the track became a Standardbred track alone, with neighbouring track Indiana Downs satisfying the thoroughbred racing enthusiasts.
