The Maharaja of Rajpipla was born on 30th January 1890 in the state of Gujarat in India. He was the 36th and final ruler of the Narmada District of the Gujarat State, although he spent much of his life at his English estate, The Manor in Old Windsor. He was an avid man of the turf and remains the only Indian owner of an Epsom Derby winner which he achieved in 1934 with his horse appropriately named Windsor Lad (SR 2100). Prior to this Classic win he had achieved a similar Classic win in the 1926 Irish Derby with Embargo (SR 1953) trained by Charles Bartholomew and ridden by Steve Donoghue. He died on 29th April 1961 at The Windsor Manor aged 61.
