The 2nd running of the Irish Oaks was held on Tuesday 21st July 1896 over 1 mile of The Curragh, starting at the Madrid Post. A pot of 300 sovereigns was availble, 20 sovereigns to the second and 10 sovereigns to the third. The winner was owned by Mr W J Goulding, trained by Mr W P Cullen at Rathbride Cottage, Kildare and ridden by John Doyle. The winner won in a canter by 2 lengths, with 12 lengths between second and third.

Kosmos jumped away in front, followed at some distance by Rinvanny and Stella XI. They kept this order throughout the race, and the favourite was never threatened, winning in a canter by 2 lengths, with 12 lengths back to the third.
