ISTANBUL RACECOURSE
The principal racecourse in Turkey is at Istanbul and is the Veliefendi course. Racing is administered by the Turkish Jockey Club which moved to the track in October 1986. The course has an all weather track with track circumference 2020 metres, and hosts all of the principal classic races.
Each May the course hosts the Group 1 Erkeli Tay Deneme (2000 Guineas) and the Disi Tay Deneme (1000 Guineas), whilst in June the Gazi Derby is a Group 1 event.
One of its other major races is the Group 2 Bosphorous Cup run over 12 furlongs each September. In 2009 it proved to be a triumph for Alan Munro on Halicarnassus. On the previous day he had also won the Group 2 Istanbul Trophy when riding Eva's Request.
