The racecourse of Jefferson Downs was located in the state of Louisiana. It first opened its gates to harness racing on 23rd September 1954 when known as Magnolia Park Racecourse. The 5 furlong oval dirt track had separate 4 furlong and 6 ½ furlong chutes and a 210 metre home straight. In 1959 it converted to thoroughbred racing. The Racecourse closed in 1965 because of damage from Hurricane Betsy, and again on 1st November 1967 when the facilities were totally destroyed by an horrific fire. Jefferson Downs was rebuilt in another location on Lake Ponchartrain, north of the New Orleans Airport, opening on 2nd August 1971. The new racecourse was a 6 furlong oval, with 8 ½ furlong chute and 200 metre home straight, complemented by a glass enclosed grandstand with the capacity to seat 7,000 and had, as its principal race, the Jefferson Futurity. It remained open until 20th November 1992 when it was closed, levelled and replaced by new housing.
