The Kentucky Downs racecourse can be found in the vicinity of the city of Franklin in the state of Kentucky. It first opened its gates on 22nd April 1990, then being known as Dueling Grounds Race Course. Amazingly in its first year it hosted steeplechase jumps races but became entirely a flat race track by 1992. By 13th September 1993 it had switched to thoroughbred racing on its 11 furlong turf track with 3 turns, offering 6 days of racing in that year. Its principal thoroughbred race is the Group III Kentucky Cup Turf Handicap Stakes, run in 1991 when Silver Medalion was ridden to victory by Craig Perret. Other feature thoroughbred races include the Kentucky Cup Turf Dash Stakes and the Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf Stakes. Launched as a steeplechase track, jumps racing lapsed, but returned in 2000 only to lapse again shortly afterwards. However, it was returned to the programme in 2008 and now hosts the Belle Meade Plantation Stakes, a well-regarded steeplechase. Although racing lapsed briefly, the track was taken over by a new ownership team in 1997 and was relaunched as Kentucky Downs on 13th September 1998. |
