Races have taken place in Limerick since 1880. The course at Greenmount Park was established in 1916 and witnessed high class racing for 83 years until its closure after the March meeting in 1999.

Limerick has always welcomed top class chasers and Cottage Rake was certainly no exception. The horse won its first race at the track and was to go on to win 3 Cheltenham Gold Cups.

In 1996 Greenmount Stud, near Patrickswell, was bought with the purpose of building a new racecourse, not seen in Ireland for over 50 years. The course was completed and finally opened in May 2001.

The principal races run at the track are the Supermac's Hurdle and the Munster National Chase run in October. In the most recent 2008 running of the National Chase the Ruby Walsh ridden Dear Villez was successful
