Very grateful to Craig Sutton for the scan of the rare jug commemorating the North Staffordshire races held in 1858

Records show that a meeting took place in 1858 and that John Osborne's horse Spider won the principal race, The Potters Plate. However, the first recorded meeting at the racecourse was in 1854.

On the outskirts of Stoke on Trent and operating as a racecourse from 1854 until 1860, with the final meeting taking place at this North Staffs venue on 7th August 1860
DISTANCES
2 miles and upwards.
PRINCIPAL RACE
Appropriately enough, The Potters Plate
WORLD WAR I
Closed before War began
WORLD WAR II
Closed before War began
FACT
John Osborne was born in 1833 and lived to the ripe old age of 89, dying in 1922.
QUESTION
How old was the famous Gentleman jockey John Osborne when he rode Spider to victory in the Potters Plate?
CURRENT SITUATION
Little evidence of a racecourse now exists.
