The San Sebastian racecourse is situated close to the border with France, some 5 miles from Lasarte-Oria in the suburb of Zubieta. It is a right handed turf track with a circumference of approximately 1 mile, but also has a second inner dirt track used predominantly for training purposes. The racecourse, the brainchild of King Alfonso Xiii, was built on a former airfield in 1916 and has enjoyed a chequered history from significant popularity when it first opened to very poor attendances in the latter part of the 20th century. Today the racing season extends from June to September, with principal the Gran Premio de San Sebastian, contested each September over 2800 metres, the Premio Kutxa for fillies and the Gobierna Vasco, as well as the Copa De Ord over 2400 metres in August.
