The racecourse of Ttukson was located in the capital of South Korea Seoul and was built in 1954 with racing being launched in May of that year. Racing continued at Ttukson until 1989 when it was moved to a more modern racecourse at Gwacheon, about 16 kilometres south of Seoul. The new site had been built for the 1988 Olympics, has sufficient stables to house 1400 horses, and staged the first race meeting took place on 1st September 1989. Its two main grandstands have the capacity to hold 35,000 in its Happyville grandstand, and a further 42,000 in its Luckyville grandstand. Whilst racing takes place throughout the year, the principal races are the Korean Derby over 9 furlongs in May, the Korea Cup over 9 furlongs in September and the Grand Prix over 2300 metres held each December.
