The 41st winner of the St Leger, held on Monday 23rd September 1816 over the St Leger course of Town Moor, was The Duchess, a bay filly by Cardinal York out of Miss Nancy, owned by Sir Bellingham Reginald Graham, trained by James Croft of Glasgow House, Middleham and ridden by Ben Smith. A field of 13 runners contested the race, although there were 46 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 1150 Guineas. (Equivalent to £94,400 in 2017)

Having won The Gold Cup at Pontefract earlier in her 3 year old career, it is surprising that The Duchess went off at such a big price because she won the St Leger fairly easily. In a long, outstanding career spanning 33 races, she won 19 and was second on no less than 7 occasions. She won the Doncaster Stakes, Doncaster Club Stakes and repeated her Pontefract Gold Cup success in 1817, won the York Gold Cup in 1818 and the Newcastle Gold Cup in 1819. Over Round 119%
