The 62nd winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 20th September 1837 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Mango, a brown colt by Emilius out of Mustard, owned by Mr Charles Greville. A field of 13 runners contested the race, although there were 60 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 3000 sovereigns. (Equivalent to £315,000 in 2017)

This race was a catalogue of disasters from start to finish. After the obligatory false start the runners got away with The Doctor and Dan Dawson making the early running. At the bottom of the hill Epirus was crowded towards the ditch and eventually fell in it unseating Bill Scott. He fell onto the racecourse and was kicked by The Prime Warden breaking his collar-bone. After the Red House a greyhound ran onto the course, interfering with several runners causing Henriade to throw John Day. In a strongly contested final furlong The Doctor and Abraham Newland went head to head until Sam Day forced Mango between the two to get up by 3/4 length in 3 minutes 23 seconds. The winner raced 13 times winning 9 of his races. His 2 year old career was unremarkable, and he was unplaced in the Epsom Derby but he got better with age. Over Round 112%
