The 70th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 17th September 1845 over the 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was The Baron, a chestnut colt by Irish Birdcatcher out of Echidna, owned by Mr George Watts. A field of 15 runners contested the race, although there were 101 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 5050 sovereigns. (Equivalent to £591,000 in 2017)
