The start was delayed by a couple of false starts, but once they were allowed to go it was Dunlop and Disraeli who set the early pace. By the time they had reached the hill it was Canopus' turn to lead from the front and, despite being an outsider, he led to 3 furlongs out. Jeddah took over 2 out, but Watts was immediately concerned at how well Wildfowler was travelling. He was right to be worried beacuse Wildflower led at the distance and easily drew away to win by 4 lengths in 3 minutes 13 seconds, with 6 lengths between the favourite and Bridegroom II.
