Released at the first attempt, Scottish Union made the early running from Glen Loan and Magic Circle. However, Magic Circle soon took control after half a mile, with Pasch settled in last place by Richards. Rounding the home turn Magic Circle continued to lead from Scottish Union, Pasch and Glen Loan, but at the distance Pasch weakened quickly leaving Scottish Union and Challenge to draw clear. Scottish Union stayed on the better to win by a neck in 3 minutes 11.6 seconds, with 4 lengths back to the disappointing Pasch. In a career of 13 races, Scottish Union won 6 and was second on 3 further occasions.
