The New South Wales town of Wauchope is located in the Mid-North Coast region of the state some 250 miles north of the state capital Sydney. It is an inland town on the Hastings River and has good transport links with its near neighbour Port Macquarie, which is 12 miles west, via the Oxley Highway. A settlement began to develop in the region in 1836 when Captain Robert Wauch bought a substantial area of land on King Creek and a village began to form. Over many years the village grew into the town of Wauchope and today the population has grown to over 7,500 inhabitants. The town has its own racing group, the Wauchope Jockey Club, which stages their races at Port Macquarie racecourse, except in 2015 when they went to Kempsey. The earliest occasion when races were widely recorded in Wauchope was on Monday 25th May 1891 when the principal races were the Wauchope Handicap and the Birthday Handicap.
