Meetings are known to have taken place at Whitehaven and West Cumberland on and off from as early as 1852. Meetings took place in 1852-64, with a break in 1855, and from 1869 to 1872.

The West Cumberland Meeting moved to a new course at Whitehaven with the first meeting taking place on 23rd April 1878. The first race was the Open Hunters' Flat Race and was won by Golden Pippin, owned by the Duke of Hamilton and ridden by G.Mulcaster. The famous rider 'Bay' Middleton won the second race, a famous racehorse was later to be named after hi,. A famous horse of the time was Lord of the Harem who won on 21 occasions but on 18th April 1885 he suffered such a bad injury that he had to be put down.
