BELLEWSTOWN RACECOURSE
Bellewstown Racecourse can be located at Drogheda in County Meath and can certainly boast a history dating back to 1730. Indeed, the local Dublin Gazette reported a race meeting taking place in August 1726.
The racecourse gained Royal approval in 1780 when George III sponsored His Majesty's Plate with a £100 prize to the winner.

From that date it became a tradition that successive English monarchs continue to sponsor a race at the meeting, and the trend continued right up to 1980, until the present Queen Elizabeth II decided not to do so but to switch allegiance to the Curragh where she sponsors the Royal Whip.
