Brief History

 

 

1819

 First recorded meeting to be held on Cleeve Hill, a meeting consisting of flat racing only,  and the Royal Family were well represented by the Duke of Gloucester, who donated 100 guineas to the prize fund.

 

1823

 The filly Angelica wins a notable double of the Gold Cup and Gloucestershire Stakes owned by the gambler Jack Mytton.

 

1831

 A meeting is held for the first time at the new course at Prestbury.

 

1834

 The Grand Annual Steeplechase is run for the first time and still survives at the festival meeting today. This was the first occasion when both flat races and races over fences were run, and the famous Captain Beecher took advantage of this by winning a race on Conservative.

 

1839

 Lottery wins the Grand Annual against just 3 rivals, having previously triumphed in the first Aintree Grand National. He was to be successful again 2 years later.

 

1840

 Racing moved from Prestbury to Andoversford for a brief period, only to return to Prestbury in 1847.

 

1842

 The last recorded flat race meeting to be held at Cleeve Hill.

1902

 Cheltenham races take place for the first time on the present course at Prestbury Park.

 

1904

 The National Hunt Chase is run at Prestbury Park and is won by Timothy Titus, ridden by Ivor Anthony.

 

1907

 A famous year for Cheltenham with the London firm of Pratts taking over the running of the meeting from the much smaller,local group. The Cheltenham Steeplechase Company was formed, under the directorship of F.H.Cathcart, and the Cathcart Challenge Cup is still competed for today.

 

1914

 The new stands are completed and the present day Festival races start to take shape.

 

1924

 The Cheltenham Gold Cup over 3 ¼ miles is run for the first time.

1920-29

1927

 The Champion Hurdle is competed for the first time.

 

1932

 Golden Miller wins the first of five consecutive Gold Cups.
