LAYTOWN RACECOURSE
It is amazing to think that anyone would dream of organising a race meeting on a 3 mile stretch of sand, but that dream came true in 1876 when it is thought the local priest organised the first meeting.
By 1901 it was a local man, Paddy Delaney, who took over the running of the meet. The course is situated at Laytown which is in County Louth.

The races have continued unabated since those early days, even operating during both World Wars.
It is difficult to conceive where to place a crowd to view races taking place on a beach and very much subject to the tide going out (or coming in !), but a 3 acre field next to the sand is transformed each meeting to include a grandstand and marquees.
