 In the Uruguyan capital of Montevideo can be found the Hipodromo Nacional de Maronas in the Maronas area of the city

Montevideo_1954b.JPG (7101 bytes) The racecourse was closed for a 6 year period between 1997 and 2003 before being taken over by a private company called Maronas Entertainment. It reopened on 29th June 2003 witnessed by a crowd in excess of 7000.

Its principal race is the Gran Premio Jose Pedro Ramirez which is contested on 6th January each year. This is a Group 1 race run over 2400 metres and was first contested in 2007 when the Jorge Ricardo ridden Good Report, bred in Argentina, was successful.
Montivedeo 1947.JPG (4331 bytes) In the most recent running on 6th January 2009 the Jose Silva ridden Relento, bred in Brazil, was victorious.
