The racecourse was closed for a 6 year period
between 1997 and 2003 before being taken over by a private company called Maronas
Entertainment. It reopened on 29th June 2003 witnessed by a crowd in excess of 7000.

| Its principal race is the Gran Premio Jose Pedro Ramirez which is contested on 6th January each year. This is a Group 1 race run over 2400 metres and was first contested in 2007 when the Jorge Ricardo ridden Good Report, bred in Argentina, was successful. | |||||

the Jose Silva ridden Relento, bred in Brazil, was victorious.
