Ovrevoll racecourse is situated in a forested area about 8 miles north-west of Oslo City Centre at the head of the Oslo Fjord. It is Norways only racecourse and has a left handed oval turf track of 10 furlongs with a 4 furlong home straight, and an all-weather dirt surface. Racing takes place from April to November. The racecourse was opened in 1932 by King Haaken VII and Queen Maud. The principal race is the Norwegian Derby held each August. In 2003 Lights Out won the Derby and St Leger at the course before going on to win the Danish St Leger. The most valuable race is the Group 3 Marit Sveaas Minnelop Memorial over 1800 metres contested each August.  The inaugural running was in 1991 when a Norwegian financier Christen Sveaas initiated the race, naming it after his wife Marit who died in 1991. In 1996 Kill the Crab won the race having claimed the Norwegian 1000 and 2000 Guineas in 1995. Other feature races include the Oslo Cup over 2400 metres, first run in 2005, and the Polar Cup over 1370 metres.
