| PHOENIX PARK RACECOURSE | ||
| Phoenix Park racecourse was situated on the North West of Dublin on the edge of Phoenix Park and first saw racing in 1902. The founder of the course was J H H Peard and it was later taken over by his son Harry, and his widow took over between 1950 and 1969. | ||
| In the 70's and 80's the course was run by a consortium including Robert Sangster and Vincent O'Brien. The course witnessed much success in this period in hosting prestigious races, including the Phoenix Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes, but it closed its doors in 1990. | ||
| The Irish Champion Stakes was first run in 1976 when known as the Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. The first winner was Malacate. In 1984 the Group One race over 10 furlongs was renamed the Phoenix Champion Stakes and was won by Sadler's Wells, ridden by Pat Eddery. | ||
| In 1990 Elmaamul won the Phoenix for Hamdan Al Maktoum when trained by Dick Hern and ridden by Willie Carson. On the closure of the course the event was transferred to Leopardstown and became the Irish Champion Stakes. | ||
