ROSCOMMON RACECOURSE
Records show that racing first took place in the Roscommon area as early as 1837, and those early meetings were organised by the British Military. The appeal of the turf and the accessibility to ordinary punters was improved significantly when the railway network was extended from Dublin to Roscommon in 1860.
Racing ceased during the Second World War period, stopping in 1936 and did not resume until 1948.

The current administrative body first made use of the present day course in 1885.
