SLIGO RACECOURSE
Sligo Racecourse is situated at Cleveragh Demesne in County Sligo and can boast a tradition of racing dating back to the early 1800's. Indeed, a meeting did take place at Bowmore, Rosses Point in September 1781. The August meetings from 1805 were extremely popular following on from meetings at Bellewstown and Maze.
There was a significant period without racing until local landowner John Wynne made land available to develop a course at Hazlewood. The inaugural meeting at the new track took place in April 1873. By 1886 John Wynne was unable to make his land available and racing returned to Bowmore until 1898, when racing resumed at Hazlewood.

Racing ceased during World War I but did take place until the middle of the Second World War, with the final meeting being held in April 1942.
The current racecourse at Cleveragh Demesne was developed on land purchased from the Wood-Martin family. After much work the first meeting took place on 24th August 1955. By 3rd August 2005 the 50th Anniversary was being celebrated.
